Director of Risk Management
Robert Broida, MD, FACEP, serves as the Director of the USACS Risk Management Department. He also is the Chief Operating Officer of Physicians Specialty Limited, Risk Retention Group (PSLRRG), a South Carolina captive insurance company. He is a member of the USACS National Clinical Governance Board and heads the Risk Management Committee.
Dr. Broida is a board-certified emergency physician with more than 20 years of experience. He has been active in emergency physician professional liability insurance since 1989, and possesses a wealth of experience in captive insurance company management. Dr. Broida also has a strong track record of ED operational experience, improving emergency department quality, efficiency, patient safety, satisfaction and profitability.
Dr. Broida is the ACEP representative to The Joint Commission Stroke Certification Technical Advisory Panel. The national panel of experts sets new standards for all levels of Stroke Center Certification. Dr. Broida represents ACEP on The Joint Commission Professional Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC) as well as their Technical Expert Panels for Comprehensive Cardiac Centers and Acute Stroke-Ready Hospitals. He is the ACEP appointee to the AMA Task Force on Opioids and is an active member of the national ACEP Medical-Legal and EM Practice Committees. Dr. Broida was recently appointed to the new ACEP Clinical Data Registry Task Force after serving on their Quality Measure Technical Expert Panel. He is the past Chair of the ACEP Section on Quality Improvement/Patient Safety. He also served on the ACEP Task Force on Boarding and was co-author of the 2008 White Paper on ED Crowding. Locally, he has served on the Board of Directors of Ohio ACEP, spending many years as Treasurer.
Active politically, Dr. Broida was a founding member of the USACS PAC, serving on the Board of Trustees (as Treasurer) and previously was a Board Member for NEMPAC.
Dr. Broida chaired the subcommittee and was the primary author for the 2013 ACEP Policy Paper on ED Admission/Transition Orders. He was the physician co-author of Risk Management Pearls for the ED (2012), published by the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management (of the American Hospital Association). Other recent papers include; the Emergency Medicine Quality and Patient Safety Curriculum (Acad EM Med), Improving ED Hands-Off (Annals), Use of Time-Out Protocols in Emergency Medicine (TJC Quality Journal) and Procedural Safety in Emergency Care (TJC Quality Journal).
