Kristine Song, MD
Core Faculty at Mercy Anderson Residency, Simulation Director

Medical School: University of Kentucky College of Medicine
Residency: University of Kentucky
Kristine Song, MD is the Simulation Director for the Anderson Emergency Medicine Program based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Song completed her medical education and emergency medicine residency at the University of Kentucky.
Early in her medical school journey, Dr. Song found that she enjoys mentoring younger medical students through leading the Anatomy Mentor Program. Her curiosity for learning led her to initiate a research project that evaluated comprehension differences when listening to podcasts at 1x versus 1.5x speed, taking it from the initial IRB process to publication. During her residency, Dr. Song pursued her passion for teaching as academic chief, contributing to the development of an EKG lecture series, anaphylaxis EMS protocols, updating code pager bootcamp, and creating slit lamp exam sim model. She continues to engage with current residents through teaching EKG basics, STEMI and STEMI mimics, atrial fibrillation, abdominal trauma, ENT foreign body removal, and procedure workshops. She also teaches the USACS airway workshops at the CEME Procedural Skills Conference.
- Identify the common complications associated with endotracheal intubation
- Explain strategies to minimize or prevent adverse events during intubation
- Identify the common STEMI mimics and describe the characteristic EKG patterns associated with each
- Apply a systematic approach to EKG interpretation to reduce misdiagnosing a STEMI
- Describe STEMI equivalent EKG patterns that may require immediate intervention
- Identify the common causes for new-onset atrial fibrillation
- Recognize the management should be individualized based on the etiology and clinical context of the arrhythmia
- Identify the medications and interventions used in the management of atrial fibrillation, including rate and rhythm control strategies as well as anticoagulation
- Differentiate between blunt and penetrating abdominal trauma
- Understand the role and limitation of the different imaging modalities (e.g., FAST exam vs CT) in abdominal trauma evaluation
- Apply the principles of initial assessment and resuscitation of abdominal trauma using ATLS protocols
