Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Your career in pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) doesn’t have to follow a single path.

At USACS, we believe you should have the freedom to shape your work around what matters most to you. That might mean focusing on clinical care, staying involved in academics, teaching and mentoring the next generation of PEM Physicians, contributing to research and quality improvement, or taking on leadership roles. You can pursue those interests and remain connected to a wide network of other PEM Physicians regardless of whether you practice in an academic or community-based setting. We provide the support you need to develop your skills, along with a platform to leverage your expertise and improve pediatric care across a practice that sees more than 1 million pediatric ED visits annually.

"It all begins with the freedom to chart your own course. When speaking to Physicians, I like to ask: What aspects of PEM make you happiest? Perhaps you want to be a clinical expert or educator. Maybe you have a passion for simulation. No matter the answer, our goal is for you to do what you love in a place that fits your needs."

Your PEM Impact at USACS

Your expertise can reach far beyond a single emergency department.

  •  >1 million pediatric patients cared for annually across our programs nationwide.
  • 100% of USACS sites have completed the Pediatric Readiness Assessment.
  • 90% of USACS sites score in the top quartile for pediatric readiness.

Our PEM Physicians play a critical role in supporting Clinicians who care for children across our network, including in community hospitals where approximately 85% of pediatric emergency department visits occur nationally. We work to keep our EDs pediatric-ready and provide our Clinicians with access to the expertise and resources they need to care for young patients. That includes pediatric-specific clinical aids, such as our internally developed KidRx app and clinical management tools (CMTs). Clinicians can also call the FailSafe line to connect with a PEM Physician for a second opinion or guidance on a case at any time. Behind these efforts are PEM leaders who bring specialized knowledge to the practice and help strengthen pediatric emergency care across all our sites.
