The Town of La Plata is located in Southern Maryland, approximately 30 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., 60 miles south of Baltimore, 45 miles southwest of Annapolis, and 80 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. It serves as the county seat of Charles County.

La Plata was originally established in the 1870s when the Pennsylvania Railroad was granted a right-of-way to build tracks and a station in the area. The town was officially incorporated on April 4, 1888. Since then, it has grown into a charming small town of approximately 8,700 residents, with hundreds of small businesses serving the Southern Maryland region.
