Michael Silverman, MD, FACEP, is Chair of Emergency Medicine at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA. He also serves as a certified executive coach, driven by his passion for Physician development. He has authored numerous textbook chapters and original research papers and has lectured at the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) annual meeting.
Dr. Silverman is the author of Director’s Corner: Lessons in Emergency Medicine Leadership and Management. His book is based on “Director’s Corner,” a column he has written for Emergency Physician’s Monthly since 2008. He currently serves as an executive editor for the publication and is an active member of Maryland ACEP. He has served multiple terms on the board of directors and has held nearly every role, including as an ACEP councilor and representative on state task forces. After two terms as Maryland ACEP President-Elect and President, he is now on the board as the Immediate Past President.
Following residency, Dr. Silverman joined Saint Agnes Healthcare in Baltimore, MD. He started his administrative career as the operations director and Associate Medical Director. Throughout his career, he has also served as the chair of emergency medicine at MedStar Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, MD. While at Harbor Hospital, he was an NFL RSI Sideline Physician at M and T Bank Stadium and was the Medical Director for the Baltimore Stopover of the Round the World Volvo Ocean Race. He later worked for Alteon Mid-Atlantic as the director of the company’s leadership academy, and for many years, as the chief performance officer.
Dr. Silverman’s prior academic appointments include part-time Instructor of Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He assumed this position while working at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and was the co-director of an emergency medicine administrative fellowship. Dr. Silverman and his EDs have won several awards for quality and patient satisfaction. He has been recognized by two different companies as an Affiliate Medical Director of the Year, both in 2009 and 2021.
Dr. Silverman is a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed his emergency medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was chief resident. Outside of work, he enjoys photography and spending time with his family, particularly at the beach.
