The Regional Emergency Medicine (EM) Medical Director’s primary responsibility is to care for patients by building highly reliable, high performing clinical teams and producing effective outcomes for patients and the organization. The Regional EM Medical Director is responsible for providing leadership to all Medical Directors and Emergency Departments (ED) or related Service Lines (Observation Medicine, etc.) at multiple hospital sites within a Region. She/He collaborates with the hospital leadership teams, Regional APP Director, Medical Directors, Emergency Physicians, APPs, ED nursing leadership, and hospital medical staff to ensure the ED care delivery model achieves high-quality patient care. As the regional leader, she/he is accountable for achieving at each hospital key performance metrics, team-based culture, performance coaching, recognition, career guidance, and a pipeline of talent for the Region. The Regional EM Medical Director will report to the Regional Vice President.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Leadership/Talent
- Establish and maintain strong Hospital partnerships and relationships with an emphasis on customer service measured by top quartile hNPS semiannual survey results.
- Develop USACS leaders who are skilled at managing partnerships with hospital leaders and who establish trust and collaborative relationships with hospital leadership team.
- Accountability to site-level results and driving performance outcomes with regular communications and meetings with clinical leaders and their teams.
- Reviewing and analyzing data on a regular basis to identify gaps before they become larger issues or systemic problems. Be proactive and identify performance or contract risks and implement tactics to respond to these risks.
- Lead by example, role model the USACS House Rules, and create a culture that embraces shared success.
- Build and retain an effective team, leverage talent processes effectively, and review succession planning. This includes having two or more performance and career discussions with each site leader annually.
- Participate in the recruitment of qualified leadership for all sites within the region, including key nursing personnel, to create the most capable clinical team possible.
- Ensure appropriate credentialing, orientation, and training of providers in compliance with hospital policies and departmental needs.
- Maintain knowledge of facility human resources (HR) policies and procedures and works with HR and legal teams.
- Identify and participate in and/or provides opportunities for ongoing, focused education courses for/by the staff, as appropriate to the staff, patient population and needs of each site.
- Additional teaching or supervisory responsibilities may exist in teaching facilities.
Clinical and Service Operations
- Monitor patient experience and patient flow. Design and implement process improvement strategies to improve and optimize.
- Work to ensure that medical staff policies support the department and hospital vision for site care.
- Oversee the staffing and scheduling of physicians and APPs.
- Perform quality assurance and lead improvement initiatives and/or support the Regional Quality Director and site Quality Directors.
- Monitor the financial performance at the sites.
- Provide input into the operating and capital budgets of the hospital department, as needed
- Monitor and educate site leadership on ED or related Service Line regulatory issues and ensure compliance.
- Prepare for and participate in accreditation or certification surveys involving the ED and/or related Service Lines.
- Participate in risk management activities including communication with facility legal representative(s) concerning relevant departmental issues. Work with site leadership and staff to identify and mitigate areas of high risk.
- Ensure site leadership and providers are aware of and compliant with department, hospital, and medical staff policies.
- Annually assist in development of USACS budget and setting goals on productivity and cost
- Oversee and manage coder comms outliers at site(s)
- Check USACS email daily and respond in timely manner to all forms of communication
Relationships
- Serve as the hub of effective & transparent communication between the clinical teams (physicians & APPs) and: USACS Regional and Divisional leadership teams, Hospital and Nursing Leadership, Hospital Medical Staff
- Support site leaders in responses to patient complaints or grievances related to patient care (physicians or APPs).
- Have membership in or chair hospital committees as appropriate (i.e. Improvement, case management, risk management, utilization review, credentialing, etc.)
- Staff executive committee and committees for disaster preparedness critical care, quality.
- Serve as community and media representative when necessary, in collaboration with hospital administration and public relations department.
- Oversee account management strategy with RVP. Monthly, quarterly, annual reviews

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required
- Medical Degree
- Medical Board Certification
- State Medical License(s)
- Federal DEA License
Preferred
- EM Residency Training, Fellowship Training or other training as applicable
- ABEM/ABOEM Board Certification – active
- Scholars Program
- 5+ years physician leadership experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position to be worked in conjunction with clinical duties. While variable, most accomplish all their work using a 50:50 rule-of-thumb. This position regularly requires long hours and frequent weekend work. The Regional EM Medical Director must ensure 24-hour availability of physician leadership to respond to staff and hospital needs. Regional EM Medical director is required to have at minimum one full day/week in office/hospital for regular scheduled meetings, rounding, etc.
Travel
- Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
- Attendance at USACS Leadership meetings is mandatory.
