Frequently Asked Questions

What is Telemedicine Technology?

Telemedicine technology facilitates access to patient care by enabling remote connections through video between a Clinician and a patient, or between Clinicians. Its greatest strengths include improved accessibility and timeliness, enhanced quality of care, better support for surge and staffing needs, and risk mitigation through access to consultants. It also serves as an effective tool for interacting with patients who are in quarantine.

How Does Telemedicine Improve Patient Care?

Telemedicine enables more informed decision-making in patient care by connecting the right team at the right time, whether between a patient and a Physician or APP, or among multiple Physicians and APPs collaborating on time-sensitive decisions. Without telemedicine, such care is often not possible. It also supports oversight of Physicians and APPs, remote staffing, improved access to consultants in rural areas, on-demand follow-up care, and robust remote outpatient monitoring.

How is USACS a Leader in Telemedicine Services?

We maintain an integrated relationship with our hospital partners, a key consideration and differentiator when choosing a telemedicine partner. We distinguish ourselves through strong performance in quality and risk management, which is further reflected in our telemedicine products, along with the network integrity that supports them. While large vendors often offer a one-dimensional experience, we provide a continuum of care options, from the patient’s home through 90 days post-discharge. We can deliver these services using a hospital system’s existing platforms, by developing a tailored solution, or by providing a standalone product that operates alongside our partners’ systems. Our Physicians and APPs are also local, giving them a deeper understanding of the resources available to support effective patient care plans.

What Are the Benefits of Telemedicine?

Telemedicine is a powerful vehicle for delivering excellent care. It is efficient, timely, cost-effective, and far-reaching. Its applications range from on-demand direct care to augmented care through Clinician-to-Clinician interactions. Telemedicine also reduces risk by expanding options for post-discharge patient access, helps address patient surges in an on-demand manner, and reduces Clinician burden by providing alternative ways to interact with patients.

What is the Role of Telemedicine in the Hospital?

Telemedicine can play various roles in a hospital setting. For example:

  • Tele-emergency services for patients at home who are considering whether they need to come to the emergency department.
  • Collaboration amongst Physicians including tele-triage within the ED, Tele-Hospitalist, Tele-Observation, and Tele-ICU; as well as ED staff oversight and tele-follow up.
  • Telemedicine can be helpful in the hospital to reduce PPE use by limiting the number of in-person encounters between the Physician or APP and patient.
