Douglas Gallo MD, FAEMS, FACEP

Dr. Gallo is the Chair of the US Acute Care Solutions Prehospital Care Committee and an EMS Physician at Summa Health System in Akron, OH.  He is dual-boarded in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Servies and also holds dual fellowships in the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Academy of Emergency Medical Services.  Dr. Gallo is both a practicing EM attending physician and the EMS medical director for Summa Health System.  The Summa Health EMS System encompasses 13 squads, ~300 providers and an annual call volume of approximately 30,000 calls per year.  Dr. Gallo is personally on-call for all agencies, 24/7.  Dr. Gallo divides his time between working clinical shifts in the ED where he teaches Summa’s EM residents and running Summa’s EMS system.  Dr. Gallo spends a great deal of time delivering continuing education to the EMS squads, conducting quality review, providing feedback and designing innovative evidence-based EMS protocols.  With the help of his hard-working EMS team at Summa, he has delivered over 1,000 hours of EMS instruction in the last five years as medical director in Akron.

Dr. Gallo also serves on several multidisciplinary committees within the Summa Health System, is a founding member of the Ohio Chapter of NAEMSP, and provides EMS leadership at the local, regional, and state level.  Dr. Gallo earned his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and his medical degree from the University of Virginia before completing his residency in Emergency Medicine at Pitt County Memorial Hospital/Vidant Medical Center.  He then returned to the University of Virginia where he completed an EMS Fellowship that earned him a recognition of excellence award from NAEMSP.  He then served as medical director for Stamford EMS and Darien EMS in Connecticut for five years, where he also helped create Connecticut’s first-ever statewide EMS protocols and pioneered the state’s Specialty Care Transport System.  Dr. Gallo moved to Akron in 2017 whereupon he assumed the role of EMS medical director for Summa Health System.
