John Casey, DO, MA, FACEP, FACOEP, is the Program Director for the Emergency Medicine Residency at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital in Columbus, OH. Dr. Casey also is active as an EMS Director and has been an Attending Physician there since 2012. He is a co-host of EM Over Easy and a frequent national lecturer on topics ranging from clinical practice to innovations in healthcare and policy. Dr. Casey is the OhioHealth Doctors Hospital past president of the medical staff and has professional affiliations with the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians, and the American Osteopathic Association. Some of his awards include the USACS Maimonides Award for Teaching Excellence, the Emergency Medicine Physicians Clinician of the Year, the ACEP National Emergency Medicine Faculty Teaching Award, and recognition as a Champion of Change for healthcare by former President Barack Obama.
Dr. Casey earned his medical degree from The Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital.

- Differentiate common mimics and pitfalls in visual diagnosis that can lead to delayed or incorrect management in the ED
- Describe current and emerging uses of artificial intelligence in emergency department operations, diagnostics, and clinical decision making
- Evaluate the limitations, ethical considerations, and integration challenges of AI tools in real-time emergency care
- Recognize the early clinical signs of anaphylaxis and apply diagnostic criteria to ensure timely identification
- Demonstrate appropriate management of anaphylaxis, including epinephrine administration and escalation of care
- Formulate an airway plan using the “anticipated difficult airway” approach and select appropriate airway adjuncts
- Manage failed airway scenarios using a structured algorithm (e.g., “DASH,” “Vortex,” or RSI checklist) to improve patient safety
- Identify high-risk documentation areas in emergency medicine that contribute to malpractice claims and adverse outcomes
- Apply risk mitigation strategies in patient communication, documentation, and disposition planning to reduce medical-legal exposure
