Overview

This position requires occasional on-site work in Pittsburgh and has a telemedicine component.

GENERAL SUMMARY:  The Hospital Medicine Medical Director’s primary responsibility is to care for patients by building highly reliable, high performing clinical teams, evidence-based, and patient-centered clinical care for patients and the organization. The Hospital Medicine Medical Director is responsible for providing leadership and direct oversight of the medical staff for the Hospitalist Service.  They collaborate with the APP leadership team, hospitalist physicians, ED nursing leadership, hospital medical staff and hospital administration to ensure the care delivery model achieves highquality care. As the leader, they are accountable for key performance metrics and creating an inclusive work environment. As the senior leader on-site they provide performance coaching, recognition and career guidance to their teams and they are accountable for creating a pipeline of talent for the organization.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Leadership/Talent

  • Leads by example; role models the USACS House Rules and creates a culture that embraces diversity and inclusion.
  • Builds and retains an effective team, leveraging talent processes effectively, Performance Management, Talent Management, Leadership Development and succession planning. This includes having one or more performance and career discussions with each team member annually.
  • Establishes and participates in the recruitment of qualified clinical providers, including key nursing personnel, to create the most capable clinical team possible.
  • Ensures appropriate credentialing, orientation, and training of providers in compliance with hospital policies and departmental needs.
  • Maintains knowledge of facility human resources (HR) policies and procedures and works with HR and legal teams.
  • Identify and develop future leadership amongst team
  • Additional teaching or supervisory responsibilities may exist in teaching facilities.

Clinical and Service Operations

  • Support Patient Experience initiatives
  • Improve clinical performance, through evidence-based programs and processes.
  • Develop and oversee clinical and quality programs and protocols.
  • Oversee utilization review activities.
  • Ensure the accreditation readiness of the group.
  • Address patient complaints
  • Identify and remedy Patient Safety concerns.
  • Report Quality benchmarks to appropriate bodies (Medical Staff, Quality Committee, Accreditation Agencies, and State and Federal Regulators).
  • Organize and ensure timely responses to FPPE, OPPE and Peer Reviews
  • Participate in organizationally prioritized committees.

Relationships

  • Serve as the hub of effective & transparent communication between the clinical team (physicians & APPs) and: USACS home office, Hospital and Nursing Leadership, Hospital Medical Staff
  • Respond to patient complaints or grievances related to patient care (physicians or APPs).
  • Have membership in or chair hospital committees as appropriate (i.e. Improvement, case management, risk management, utilization review, credentialing, etc.)
  • Staff executive committee and committees for disaster preparedness critical care, quality.
  • Serve as community and media representative when necessary in collaboration with hospital administration and public relations department.
  • Oversee account management strategy with VP. Monthly, quarterly, annual reviews

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required

  • Medical Degree
  • Medical Board Certification
  • State Medical License
  • Federal Medical License
  • IM or FM Residency Training 
  • ABIM or ABFM Board Certification – active

Preferred

  • Scholars Program
  • 2+ years of physician leadership experience.
