4 Things for EM Physicians to Consider During the Job Search

Many emergency medicine physicians find themselves ready for a career move within the first few years of residency. Rumor is 50 to 60 percent (or up to 60 percent) of residents change jobs in their first two years out of residency. The question is, how do you make sure your next position is a good match?

1. Have a clear idea of your goals and expectation

Before you ever sit down for an interview, it is important that you have a list of questions, concerns and non-negotiables to help guide the conversation. It’s not just about proving yourself as a desirable ED physician, you also need to know this is a position you will enjoy.

2. Set yourself up for long-term wealth

Many physician groups try to lure new doctors with a large signing bonus and other flashy recruitment tactics. Don’t be fooled by the smoke and mirrors. 3. Compare your choices for malpractice management

We hope you never have to use your malpractice insurance, but unfortunately, malpractice claims are a reality in emergency medicine (in the U.S., one in every 25,000 cases turns into a claim).
