  • Focus: To develop the fellow as a successful academic emergency medicine physician. This goal will be met by mastering a variety of skills during the year of fellowship, including:
    • Clinical skills
    • Bedside teaching
    • Didactic teaching
    • Academic administrative
    • Research
    • Advocacy
    • Professional growth

  • Highlights: Education skills will be developed and improved through the following:
    • Clinical:
      • Appointment as Clinical Instructor at Northeastern Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) College of Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine
      • Annual stipend and benefits package to cover academic travel and other benefits
      • Clinical commitment of 10 shifts a month (may vary based on 30- or 31-day months), to average 10 shifts per month for the year. The clinical commitment will be a combination of teaching shifts as well as shifts that concentrate on patient care by the Fellow
      • Teaching: A teaching commitment of 5 to 15 hours per week, including:
        • Conference attendance, including preparation for key lectures (6 hours weekly) to make meaningful comments
        • Giving conference lectures approximately once a month (3 hours weekly preparation time). These will include the two significant lectures (described below) related to an area of interest, as well as assistance in the teaching of the courses that are given to specific PGY classes.
        • Participation in the PBL series for NEOMED students (6 hours weekly)
        • Lectures for medical students during their rotation in the ED at Summa Health System
      • Academics:
        • Instructional modules (with reference texts and specific assignments) including writing and publishing in the medical literature, electronic media, bedside and didactic teaching, curriculum design, acquisition of research skills, acquisition of evidence-based medicine skills, as well as administrative skills
        • Opportunities will be provided for involvement at SAEM and ACEP on various committees and task forces
        • Opportunities will be provided for attendance at key faculty development skill sessions/conferences, including but not limited to the ACEP Teaching Fellowship, EMBRS course in research skills, SAEM meeting, etc. Expenses for these meetings will be provided by the Fellow’s academic expense account.
        • In addition, Fellow can arrange to receive a Master’s degree in Education
